In the first part of this book, I describe my photographic journey and experiences
in the sixties - being part of a movement that we thought would
change the world. The book is not only about rock musicians but
also includes unusual images of peace demonstrations and humorous
celebrity event photos showing the absurdity of star worship. This
series of photos was taken while working with so-called Underground
newspapers in an effort to help create a more just and intelligent
society.
In the turbulent 1960s, the Vietnam War was raging. Young Americans were redefining themselves and the society in which they lived by challenging and rejecting traditional values and the so-called “establishment”. The frontiers of civil and personal consciousness were being pushed beyond their limits… inspired and energized by the messages of hope, freedom and change that burst forth in rich psychedelic colors from a hot, pulsating new music genre that would rapidly envelop an entire generation and alter the course of history.
It was during this time that I picked up my camera in order to lend a “visual voice” in strong support of the rising tide of anti-war sentiment and the nation’s spiritual awakening. I began my own spiritual journey by working with underground newspapers attempting to document the anti-war movement which received little if any coverage by mainstream media. My press pass and camera not only gave me access to the political scene but also provided a personal entry into the new rock music counterculture. The Sixties generation wanted to change the world and rock musicians were viewed as its leaders. As artists they had discovered how to tap into the essence of the time, how to utilize masses of energy to move people and communicate their feelings. In so doing they created a powerful transformative experience for a culture in the midst of an evolutionary elevation of consciousness. For me, my well-known images of Bob Dylan (Nashville Skyline), The Band (Music From Big Pink, and The Band), Janis Joplin (Big Brother & The Holding Company: Cheap Thrills), Van Morrison (Moondance), Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and the Woodstock Festival-- were a reflection of my deep personal belief that unity of purpose, shared consciousness, freedom to behave as we wished, coupled with the power of music to liberate the soul would set us free.
This year we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival. The world has changed. It is once again fraught with social injustice, political domination and war. Many people ask “What has happened...where has Woodstock gone?" We hear: "It was a fluke." "It can never happen again." "It was not real." It did happen and showed us a template for living which can happen again. |
